I still remember landing with a suitcase full of hopes (and snacks) and wondering what this new chapter would be like. As nerve-wracking as it was, I quickly realised I didn\u2019t need to worry, everyone here was so friendly and welcoming. It really made all the difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1020\" height=\"1020\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-2-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6019\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-2-1.jpeg 1020w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-2-1-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-2-1-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-2-1-768x768.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chemical Engineering is known for being a tough course, and I won\u2019t sugarcoat it, there were definitely moments that felt overwhelming. But once I found my rhythm, and especially once I got to know people on my course, everything felt a lot more manageable. Having friends to study with, ask questions, and sometimes just vent to during late-night revision sessions helped so much. If you\u2019re on track and have a solid support system, you\u2019ll be okay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Outside of studying<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something that helped me de-stress was getting involved outside of lectures. Becoming a student ambassador has been one of the highlights of my time here. I\u2019ve had the chance to meet so many people, share my story, and feel like I\u2019m giving back to the Loughborough community. It\u2019s honestly so fulfilling and fun, you forget it\u2019s even a job sometimes. I also started going to the gym regularly, which became a little escape for me. Whether it was a short workout or a run, it really helped me unwind. Balancing studies with things you enjoy makes a huge difference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1020\" height=\"1020\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-1-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-1-1.jpeg 1020w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-1-1-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-1-1-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-1-1-768x768.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Careers support<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another big part of my journey was applying for placements. It was definitely one of the more challenging parts of my degree so far, writing countless applications, attending assessment centres, visiting employer events on campus\u2026 it can be exhausting. But I\u2019m really glad I stuck with it. The Careers Network at Loughborough was incredibly helpful, especially with preparing for interviews. They ran mock interviews, CV clinics, and were always happy to give personalised feedback. My biggest advice is to start early and stay consistent, even when rejections come through (because they will). In the end, all the effort paid off, I secured a placement as a Hydrogen\/Gas Engineer with Bosch, and I couldn\u2019t be more excited to step into the industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Final thoughts<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1020\" height=\"1020\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-3.jpeg 1020w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-3-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-3-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2025\/07\/Sonia-3-768x768.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back, I\u2019m just really grateful. Loughborough became a second home. I\u2019ve grown a lot, academically, personally, and emotionally. If you\u2019re a future student reading this, especially if you\u2019re coming from far away like I did, just know, it\u2019s okay to be nervous, but you\u2019ll find your people. Ask for help, take breaks, join that club, go to that event.
