Student perceptions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every winter the Government sets out the annual funding for higher education in a letter to HEFCE. This letter outlines the funds that are available for allocation, alongside any government priorities. One of the priorities in the <a title=\"HEFCE Grant Letter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hefce.ac.uk\/whatwedo\/invest\/institns\/annallocns\/govletter\/\" target=\"_blank\">latest letter<\/a> is that the sector makes greater progress in delivering efficiencies, as \u201cstudents will rightly expect value for the fees they pay\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A question arising from this is what do students define as value for money?<\/p>\n<p>An insight is provided by a <a title=\"student experience report\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/study\/learningteaching\/kli\/research\/student-experience\/QAAReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">research project<\/a> led by Dr Camille Kandiko from King&#8217;s College London. The project aimed to explore the views of students entering higher education in the UK in 2012-13, and to investigate their perceptions and expectations about the quality of their learning experience and the academic standards of their chosen programmes of study.<\/p>\n<p>In regard to value for money, the report identified three criteria used by students:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Embodiment of value: Contact time<\/strong><br \/>\nThe primary way students referenced issues of quality and value in their degree was through contact time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Tangible value: Resources<\/strong><br \/>\nThe resources the institution offered and what additional costs students faced were summarised as \u2018what do you get for what you pay\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>Return on investment<\/strong><br \/>\nThe reputational value of a degree, their subject and that of the institution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every winter the Government sets out the annual funding for higher education in a letter to HEFCE.
