{"id":3588,"date":"2018-05-02T10:56:22","date_gmt":"2018-05-02T10:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/copyright.lboro.ac.uk\/teaching-learning\/?p=3588"},"modified":"2018-05-02T10:57:08","modified_gmt":"2018-05-02T10:57:08","slug":"advance-he-mental-well-being-training-embedding-mental-well-being-in-the-curriculum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/teaching-learning\/2018\/05\/02\/advance-he-mental-well-being-training-embedding-mental-well-being-in-the-curriculum\/","title":{"rendered":"Advance HE Mental Well-being Training: Embedding Mental Well-being in the Curriculum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>In the following post Dr Sarah Turner (Director of the CAP Taught Course Programme) reflects on the recent Advance HE workshop on &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heacademy.ac.uk\/knowledge-hub\/embedding-mental-wellbeing-curriculum-maximising-success-higher-education\">Embedding Mental Well-being in the Curriculum&#8217;<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With many key headlines surrounding Mental Health of students, this workshop was a good reminder to stand back and consider how we can support students (and staff) within our programme design.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some points to digest and consider over the coming months about how we encourage positive learning opportunities that also create a supportive learning environment to promote positive mental health:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teachers are the frontline for students \u2013 what could\/should we be doing about this? How do we cover this in our tutor roles?<\/li>\n<li>Post-graduate \/ Undergraduates \/ Foundation students \u2013 useful for staff to know the weeks where there are known \u2018dips\u2019 in student\/staff well-being e.g. period of assessment, after Christmas. Encouraging sharing of well-being as a mode to \u2018check-in\u2019 with students.<\/li>\n<li>World Health Organisation definition (2014) helpful to consider:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3589\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/teaching-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/05\/WHO-image.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1451\" height=\"639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/teaching-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/05\/WHO-image.png 1451w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/teaching-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/05\/WHO-image-300x132.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/teaching-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/05\/WHO-image-768x338.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/teaching-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/05\/WHO-image-1024x451.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/teaching-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/05\/WHO-image-500x220.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1451px) 100vw, 1451px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s everywhere but often invisible so perhaps the challenge is making it more explicit?<\/li>\n<li>A5 diagnostic chart for each member of staff (on their wall\/desk) so they know who to contact if something arises with a student in a tutorial?<\/li>\n<li>5 ways to embed well-being in a curriculum (by New Economic Foundation NEF):\n<ul>\n<li>Connect \u2013 connecting with students, personal 1:1, making friends in seminars, connections through learning in the classroom<\/li>\n<li>Be active &#8211;\u00a0 moving around e.g. walks together<\/li>\n<li>Take notice \u2013 encourage people to be aware of their environment in Teaching and learning<\/li>\n<li>Give \u2013 peer support \/ peer learning \/ how students give back to the Uni and how they can be citizens<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 15px\">Keep learning \u2013 foster independence, self-direction amongst students e.g. week 5 is health and well-being week \u2013 come along and colour the Uni colour map or come for a massage<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Further Resources from the workshop are available below:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/teaching-learning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2018\/05\/Addressing-MHWB-Five-Ways.pdf\">Addressing Mental Health and Well-being &#8211;
