The <a title=\"Equality Challenge Unit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecu.ac.uk\/\">Equality Challenge Unit <\/a>(which promotes equality and diversity across Higher Education) has created a specific set of resources for use by academic staff; this includes a briefing document regarding the legal context\u00a0and a set of\u00a0accessible checklists\u00a0espousing effective practice in research, learning and teaching undertakings with our undergraduate and postgraduate students, their representatives and our colleagues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"The legal framework: England, Wales\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecu.ac.uk\/publications\/files\/e-and-d-for-academics-factsheet-legislation-england-wales.pdf\/view\">The legal framework: England, Wales<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0&#8220;domestic and European legislation relating to equality and human rights provides the context within which teaching and learning are delivered&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Inclusive practice\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecu.ac.uk\/publications\/files\/e-and-d-for-academics-factsheet-inclusive-practice.pdf\/view\">Inclusive practice<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0&#8220;recognises the diversity of students, enabling all students to access course content, fully participate in learning activities and demonstrate their knowledge and strengths at assessment&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Pastoral care\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecu.ac.uk\/publications\/files\/e-and-d-for-academics-factsheet-pastoral-care.pdf\/view\">Pastoral care <\/a>&#8211; &#8220;Academic staff have a crucial role to play in providing pastoral support, being best placed to observe behaviour in the learning environment that might indicate a student is in need of support&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Promoting good relations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecu.ac.uk\/publications\/files\/e-and-d-for-academics-factsheet-good-relations.pdf\/view\">Promoting good relations <\/a>&#8211; &#8220;Academic staff have a role to play in promoting good relations in the design and delivery of courses, and in the relationships they build with students&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is worth noting\u00a0that these materials are eminently transferable to other roles within this institution and across our sector, and that equality and diversity undertakings and obligations are not just limited to academic staff.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the <a title=\"Designing for Inclusivity\" href=\"http:\/\/pdwww.lboro.ac.uk\/eventdetails.php?run=11905\">Designing for Inclusivity<\/a> Staff Development session delivered in conjunction with the Teaching Centre, colleagues will also be interested in\u00a0other Staff Development courses in this area which include the online <a title=\"Diversity in the Workplace\" href=\"http:\/\/pdwww.lboro.ac.uk\/eventdetails.php?run=10389\">Diversity in the Workplace<\/a> activity, which is a very useful refresher course,\u00a0as well as the mandatory <a title=\"Respecting Diversity\" href=\"http:\/\/pdwww.lboro.ac.uk\/eventdetails.php?run=11356\">Respecting Diversity<\/a> workshop for all staff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Equality and diversity are increasingly central considerations in all of the decisions we make and the actions\u00a0we take as Loughborough University staff.
