{"id":628,"date":"2025-12-22T11:17:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-22T11:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/?p=628"},"modified":"2025-12-22T11:17:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T11:17:11","slug":"from-the-vice-chancellor-december-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/2025\/12\/22\/from-the-vice-chancellor-december-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Vice-Chancellor \u2013 December 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/04\/image.png\" alt=\"Close-up of Professor Nick Jennings in front of stained glass windows.\" class=\"wp-image-473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/04\/image.png 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/04\/image-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/04\/image-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In my last newsletter of 2025:\u00a0major investment in our sports ecosystem, our first-ever Giving Day,\u00a0how\u00a0we\u2019re supporting staff and students to use AI responsibly,\u00a0and our winter Graduation ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Loughborough University&#039;s sporting ecosystem transformation\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/snAhq_p31ac?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investment\u00a0to\u00a0reinforce our world-leading position in sport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our&nbsp;University&nbsp;is renowned for&nbsp;its&nbsp;sporting ecosystem&nbsp;\u2013 the global success of our athletes and teams, our world-leading research&nbsp;and innovation&nbsp;that underpins those headline-hitting performances, the&nbsp;opportunities&nbsp;we&nbsp;provide&nbsp;to&nbsp;participate&nbsp;at every level, and the first-class facilities&nbsp;based&nbsp;on our campus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we are&nbsp;to&nbsp;retain&nbsp;our position in world sport, we must continue to&nbsp;push the boundaries of innovation and&nbsp;provide facilities that&nbsp;support athletes\u2019&nbsp;ongoing&nbsp;needs.&nbsp;So&nbsp;I was delighted last week to welcome&nbsp;athletes, influential sport&nbsp;leaders&nbsp;and iconic figures from across the world of sport,&nbsp;including&nbsp;Dame Denise Lewis DBE, former Olympic gold medal&nbsp;athlete&nbsp;and President of UK Athletics,&nbsp;to celebrate a major&nbsp;\u00a35.5 million&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2025\/december\/transforming-loughboroughs-sporting-ecosystem\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=article-investment-in-sporting-ecosystem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">investment in our sporting ecosystem<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;from&nbsp;the Government, UK Sport,&nbsp;multiple&nbsp;national governing&nbsp;bodies&nbsp;and&nbsp;the University&nbsp;\u2013 has enabled&nbsp;enhancements in several facilities. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have created&nbsp;a high-performance training environment&nbsp;in the Netball Centre,&nbsp;to provide a base for&nbsp;England Netball, the Vitality&nbsp;Roses&nbsp;and&nbsp;our own athletes. Enhancements in the High-Performance&nbsp;Athletics Centre (HiPAC)&nbsp;\u2013 made in&nbsp;partnership with UK Athletics, UK&nbsp;Sport&nbsp;and the UK Sports Institute&nbsp;\u2013 include&nbsp;a running analysis system&nbsp;and transformed&nbsp;medical and treatment areas.&nbsp;A&nbsp;\u00a32 million Government grant has&nbsp;allowed the swimming pool to be&nbsp;fully decarbonised&nbsp;and funding from UK Sport has&nbsp;enabled further enhancements&nbsp;to support&nbsp;elite performance training at the facility.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have also transformed the entrance to the Sir David Wallace Sports Hall to showcase the University\u2019s rich sporting history.&nbsp;All our&nbsp;graduands, their families and friends passed through the area on their way to the graduation ceremonies this month, and we received lots of positive feedback from them about the new-look space.&nbsp; If we are to continue being the partner&nbsp;of choice for&nbsp;a broad range of sports, it&nbsp;is essential&nbsp;that we stay ahead&nbsp;and continue to&nbsp;innovate to meet world class standards and the&nbsp;requirements&nbsp;of all those who use our facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/giving-day-card.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-631\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/giving-day-card.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/giving-day-card-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/giving-day-card-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">University hosts first ever Giving Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of the&nbsp;month&nbsp;we&nbsp;hosted&nbsp;our&nbsp;first ever&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/giving-day\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=giving-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Giving Day<\/a>, which was&nbsp;an opportunity for&nbsp;alumni,&nbsp;staff&nbsp;and friends of the University&nbsp;to help us change lives by donating to four Loughborough causes.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to them, we raised&nbsp;more than&nbsp;\u00a390,000&nbsp;\u2013 an incredible achievement.&nbsp;This will&nbsp;help to support&nbsp;projects across&nbsp;all our priority areas&nbsp;of&nbsp;education,&nbsp;research&nbsp;and sport. Funding will go towards&nbsp;our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/giving\/access-to-education\/opportunity-scholarships\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=giving-opportunity-scholarships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Opportunity Scholarships<\/a>&nbsp;for students from areas of low participation in higher education,&nbsp;our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/giving\/research\/digital-decarbonisation\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=giving-digital-decarbonisation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Digital&nbsp;Decarbonisation&nbsp;research<\/a>,&nbsp;our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/giving\/sport\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=giving-sport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sports Scholarships<\/a>, which support our student athletes as they&nbsp;embark on their path towards&nbsp;the global stage, or the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/giving\/access-to-education\/loughborough-fund\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=giving-loughborough-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Loughborough&nbsp;Fund<\/a>&nbsp;to support those&nbsp;most in need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving Day was&nbsp;managed&nbsp;by&nbsp;the&nbsp;Philanthropy, Alumni and Supporter Engagement (PASE) team&nbsp;in Marketing and Advancement, with the support of others from across the University.&nbsp;Thank you&nbsp;to all those who lent&nbsp;their&nbsp;support to deliver this fundraising event.&nbsp;&nbsp; I would also like to say thank you to&nbsp;the&nbsp;staff who generously donated&nbsp;money; your&nbsp;support&nbsp;will&nbsp;help us to&nbsp;make a real difference.&nbsp;And if you missed&nbsp;this year\u2019s&nbsp;Giving Day and would like to&nbsp;make a donation, you&nbsp;can&nbsp;still do so&nbsp;via the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/giving-day\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=giving-day-website\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Giving Day site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/winter-graduation.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/winter-graduation.jpeg 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/winter-graduation-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/winter-graduation-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Celebrating achievements at our winter graduation ceremonies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our winter graduation ceremonies&nbsp;are a key event as&nbsp;we&nbsp;approach the end of each&nbsp;calendar&nbsp;year and, as always, it was wonderful to&nbsp;welcome&nbsp;hundreds of our&nbsp;students, their friends,&nbsp;families&nbsp;and supporters to campus&nbsp;to celebrate their academic achievements.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the congregations we awarded&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2025\/december\/winter-graduation-2025-hon-grads-medallists\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=winter-graduation-2025-hon-grads-medallists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">honorary degrees and University medals<\/a>&nbsp;to recognise the work of&nbsp;individuals who have contributed so much to our&nbsp;University&nbsp;and society more broadly.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An&nbsp;Honorary Doctorate of the University&nbsp;was&nbsp;awarded&nbsp;to&nbsp;James Chiutsi, President of the Malawi Paralympic Committee,&nbsp;who&nbsp;was recognised&nbsp;for&nbsp;his contribution to sport and his efforts in promoting equity,&nbsp;diversity&nbsp;and inclusivity&nbsp;in Para sport.&nbsp;We&nbsp;have worked&nbsp;closely with James through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lborolondon.ac.uk\/research-innovation\/para-sport-against-stigma\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=para-sport-against-stigma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the AT2030 Para Sport Against Stigma<\/a>&nbsp;project,&nbsp;delivered in partnership&nbsp;between Loughborough University&nbsp;London, the&nbsp;International Paralympic Committee, the University of&nbsp;Malawi&nbsp;and the Global Disability Innovation Hub.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also awarded an&nbsp;Honorary Doctorate of the University&nbsp;to&nbsp;Paul Sinton-Hewitt CBE,&nbsp;the founder of&nbsp;Parkrun, in acknowledgement of&nbsp;the impact&nbsp;he\u2019s&nbsp;had on&nbsp;sport,&nbsp;health and wellbeing, aligned&nbsp;closely with&nbsp;our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/strategy\/strategic-themes\/sport-health-wellbeing\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=strategic-theme-sport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strategic theme<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>University medals&nbsp;were presented to three individuals:&nbsp;Professor Scott Lockyer, a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Advanced Materials;&nbsp;Eric&nbsp;MacIntyre,&nbsp;the former Head of Higher Education at Loughborough College&nbsp;and author of&nbsp;our&nbsp;book on the history of Loughborough&nbsp;sport; and&nbsp;Pauline King, a Senior Technician and Technical Tutor in the Department of Chemistry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our degree ceremonies mean so much to those who attend, and I know that teams\u00a0across the University work\u00a0very hard\u00a0to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable day. Thank you\u00a0as always\u00a0for everything you do\u00a0to make these events so memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/ai-hazelrigg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-633\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/ai-hazelrigg.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/ai-hazelrigg-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2025\/12\/ai-hazelrigg-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using AI responsibly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is now firmly embedded in society, with&nbsp;people everywhere debating&nbsp;both the benefits and risks.&nbsp;But AI&nbsp;isn\u2019t&nbsp;a&nbsp;new&nbsp;concept.&nbsp;I\u2019ve&nbsp;spent the last 35&nbsp;years researching AI and we can trace its foundations back at least 70 years, when the British mathematician Alan Turing&nbsp;wrote&nbsp;a research paper asking whether machines can think.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days AI is&nbsp;genuinely starting to transform society in all kinds of ways&nbsp;\u2013 how&nbsp;we live, learn and work.&nbsp;Vipin Ahlawat, our Director of IT Services, and I recently joined forces to write a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/2025\/12\/08\/ai-at-loughborough-building-confidence-capability-and-responsibility\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=vc-blog-ai-at-loughborough\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blog<\/a>&nbsp;on how we can make best use of AI in a responsible way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past year,&nbsp;we\u2019ve&nbsp;been putting in place a strong framework&nbsp;to guide how we design,&nbsp;deploy&nbsp;and use AI tools.&nbsp;We&nbsp;have made\u202fMicrosoft 365 Copilot Chat\u202favailable to all staff and&nbsp;students,&nbsp;and&nbsp;established ethical guidance for learning and assessment to ensure transparency and fairness in how&nbsp;AI is used in coursework and exams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding how to use AI responsibly is as important as the tools themselves&nbsp;and&nbsp;over the coming months,&nbsp;we\u2019ll&nbsp;be helping staff and students to develop their&nbsp;AI literacy. Through practical sessions and guidance,&nbsp;we\u2019ll&nbsp;explain, for example,&nbsp;when&nbsp;\u2013 and importantly when not \u2013&nbsp;to use AI tools in learning and research, and&nbsp;how&nbsp;AI can help to save time, improve&nbsp;efficiency&nbsp;and spark your creativity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know some of you will already be comfortable in using AI, while others may be more tentative.&nbsp;AI&nbsp;is&nbsp;changing how we work\u202fright now&nbsp;and&nbsp;I\u2019d&nbsp;recommend you begin building it into&nbsp;your daily or weekly routine.&nbsp;Perhaps start small; use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/m365.cloud.microsoft\/chat\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=copilot-chat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Copilot Chat<\/a>\u202fto summarise a document or report or\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/new.express.adobe.com\/a\/lboro.ac.uk?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=firefly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Firefly<\/a>\u202fto generate a visual&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;I generated&nbsp;the image in this section of the newsletter&nbsp;using&nbsp;AI!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d&nbsp;also recommend you look at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/it\/responsible-ai\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=responsible-ai-guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Responsible AI Guidance site<\/a>\u202fwe\u2019ve put together, which&nbsp;offers&nbsp;advice, dos and don\u2019ts, and links to useful\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/it\/responsible-ai\/ai-training-and-development-for-staff\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=ai-training-and-development-for-staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">training resources<\/a>.&nbsp;
