They have&nbsp;delivered&nbsp;performance innovations that have helped&nbsp;ParalympicsGB&nbsp;to secure a top two world ranking at three consecutive Paralympic&nbsp;Games, and&nbsp;have&nbsp;prepared&nbsp;the next&nbsp;generation of Para sport leaders. By the end of 2027, 54 students will have completed doctoral studies with us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/sport\/para-sport\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-february-2026&amp;utm_content=para-sport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Para sport<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;colleagues,&nbsp;led by&nbsp;the Head of Para Sport Alasdair Donaldson,&nbsp;they have steered the creation of a world-class ecosystem at Loughborough that is unique in higher education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;work our experts carry out in this area&nbsp;is truly inspiring and makes a real&nbsp;difference, not only&nbsp;to sport at all levels&nbsp;but to wider society too. They are committed to using their knowledge to ensure real-world&nbsp;benefits&nbsp;for all, removing barriers to&nbsp;participation, supporting&nbsp;future sports leaders,&nbsp;and enabling disabled people to choose to be healthy and active.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations to all those involved in helping us&nbsp;to&nbsp;achieve this&nbsp;incredibly&nbsp;prestigious honour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/03\/team-england-partnership.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Nick Jennings sat with Mark Osikoya, CEO of Commonwealth Games, with Professor Jo Maher, PVC for sport stood behind\" class=\"wp-image-667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/03\/team-england-partnership.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/03\/team-england-partnership-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/03\/team-england-partnership-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>University agrees landmark partnership\u00a0with Team England<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This month <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2026\/february\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-february-26&amp;utm_content=team-england-partnership\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we signed a&nbsp;landmark&nbsp;agreement<\/a>&nbsp;to be&nbsp;the&nbsp;official University Partner&nbsp;of&nbsp;Team England&nbsp;for&nbsp;the 2026 Commonwealth Games&nbsp;in Glasgow and the 2027 Commonwealth Youth Games, which will take place in Malta.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This partnership&nbsp;is an opportunity for us to further our&nbsp;long-standing&nbsp;relationship with Team England&nbsp;and raise Loughborough\u2019s profile on the world stage.&nbsp;Our&nbsp;University&nbsp;logo will appear on the podium kit, including&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;medal ceremonies. Team England staff and athletes will be welcomed to campus for&nbsp;\u2018Kitting Out\u2019,&nbsp;where they will be provided with&nbsp;their&nbsp;kit &#8211; including ceremonial wear, village,&nbsp;training&nbsp;and competition wear.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll also host&nbsp;many of&nbsp;Team England\u2019s sports&nbsp;for&nbsp;their&nbsp;immersion camps ahead of the Games, facilitating team cohesion to prepare them physically&nbsp;and&nbsp;psychologically for international competition.\u202fMany athletes, coaches and practitioners are already familiar with our elite performance environment, so it&nbsp;seems fitting&nbsp;that we will&nbsp;be able to&nbsp;host them all on campus&nbsp;together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Team England&#8217;s &#8216;Kitting Out&#8217; and immersion camps at Loughborough, the team will stay at\u202fBurleigh Court Conference Centre and Hotel, and the\u202fElite Athlete Centre and Hotel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This&nbsp;value-in-kind partnership&nbsp;reflects not only our strategic ambition to enhance our&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/strategy\/strategic-aims\/sporting-excellence\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-february-2026&amp;utm_content=sporting-excellence\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>excellence in sport<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;but also underlines our shared&nbsp;commitment&nbsp;with&nbsp;Team England to create the best possible sporting ecosystem for our athletes as they head onto the world&nbsp;stage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Glasgow Games will be held between 23 July&nbsp;and&nbsp;2 August, with 3,000 athletes competing for 74 nations across 10 separate sports, with&nbsp;a fully integrated Para sports programme.&nbsp;We\u2019ll&nbsp;soon&nbsp;begin following the journeys of&nbsp;the Loughborough-linked athletes selected for the 2026&nbsp;Commonwealth&nbsp;Games,&nbsp;showcasing&nbsp;their&nbsp;build up&nbsp;to and performance at the Games themselves.&nbsp;Make sure you keep an eye on our&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/sport\/athletes-global-stage\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_content=athletes-global-stage\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>website<\/u><\/a>, our newsletters and social media to keep up to date with all the latest&nbsp;news.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/03\/aireport.jpeg\" alt=\"A person using their phone and laptop with a augumented reality display from both devices\" class=\"wp-image-668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/03\/aireport.jpeg 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/03\/aireport-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/03\/aireport-768x432.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Second International AI Safety Report published\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fast becoming embedded&nbsp;throughout, and transforming,&nbsp;our society.&nbsp;I\u2019ve&nbsp;spent&nbsp;nearly 40&nbsp;years researching AI and can see so many benefits that it could bring to the way we live, learn and work.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;one of the most consequential technologies of our time and will&nbsp;impact&nbsp;individuals and societies around the globe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s&nbsp;vital that we have an evidenced-based assessment that provides a shared understanding of how AI capabilities are evolving,&nbsp;identifies&nbsp;the risks associated with these advances, and highlights the techniques that exist to mitigate those risks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was&nbsp;delighted, therefore,&nbsp;to have been involved as a Senior Advisor to the&nbsp;Second International AI Safety Report, which assesses what general-purpose AI systems can do, what risks they pose, and how those risks can be managed.\u202fThe&nbsp;report, which was launched&nbsp;earlier this&nbsp;month&nbsp;ahead of an AI safety summit in India,&nbsp;is backed by&nbsp;more than&nbsp;30 countries and international organisations,&nbsp;representing&nbsp;the largest global collaboration on AI safety to date.&nbsp;This year\u2019s edition&nbsp;builds&nbsp;on the&nbsp;previous&nbsp;iteration, released&nbsp;last year, which was commissioned following the inaugural AI Safety Summit, hosted by the UK government at Bletchley Park in November 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;2026&nbsp;report concludes that the trajectory of AI over the coming years&nbsp;will be shaped by choices made by developers, governments, institutions and communities. By working together and&nbsp;having a&nbsp;shared, evidence-based understanding of the AI landscape, we can ensure that&nbsp;the&nbsp;choices&nbsp;we make&nbsp;are well-informed.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\u00a0my\u00a0December\u00a0newsletter\u00a0I\u00a0highlighted\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/2025\/12\/08\/ai-at-loughborough-building-confidence-capability-and-responsibility\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-dec-25&amp;utm_term=vc-blog-ai-at-loughborough&amp;utm_content=ai-blog\">blog<\/a>\u00a0that Vipin Ahlawat, our Director of IT, and I had written about\u00a0how we can make best use of AI in a responsible way. We outlined some\u00a0of the actions we\u2019re taking\u00a0at the University\u00a0to\u00a0guide how we design,\u202fdeploy\u202fand use AI tools.\u00a0If we work to use AI responsibility at every level \u2013 as individuals, organisations, communities,\u00a0nations\u00a0and global partners\u00a0\u2013 we can ensure that we harness\u00a0and\u00a0are well placed to\u00a0manage\u00a0its href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/internal\/news\/2026\/february\/kate-gallagher-director-legal-services\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-february-2026&amp;utm_content=new-general-council\">Kate Gallagher will be joining the University as General Counsel<\/a> and Director of Legal Services at the end of May 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kate will lead our award-winning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/legal-services\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-february-2026&amp;utm_content=legal-services\">Legal Services team<\/a>, building on their excellent reputation as a trusted and valued support service working closely with our academics, professional services teams, and key industrial partners.\u00a0As General Counsel and Director of Legal Service she\u00a0will provide strategic legal advice to the University\u2019s senior management and governing body and work with colleagues to ensure that we continue to\u00a0operate\u00a0successfully in an increasingly regulated environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kate is currently head of the Higher Education team at Browne Jacobson LLP and previously worked as General Counsel and Director of Legal Services at the University of Nottingham, where she&nbsp;established&nbsp;and led a full-service in-house legal team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has&nbsp;significant experience&nbsp;advising on the wide range of legal, regulatory and governance issues affecting the Higher Education sector and has a special interest in free speech,&nbsp;whistleblowing&nbsp;and social media in the workplace, including policy writing and development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m&nbsp;sure&nbsp;you\u2019ll&nbsp;join me in welcoming to Kate
