The event was part of the UK Government\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/greatcampaign.com\/greater-together\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-may-26&amp;utm_content=greater-together\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greater Together<\/a>&nbsp;LA mission,&nbsp;its largest ever,&nbsp;led by Secretary of State for Culture,&nbsp;Media&nbsp;and Sport Lisa Nandy, to highlight the strengths of UK higher education and R&amp;D (research and development).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the visit to Los Angeles, I was joined by Professor Robin Mason from the University of Birmingham to host a roundtable event with senior British and American leaders from sporting bodies, universities, government and industry, through which we explored ways to unlock and accelerate the development of UK-US innovation and investment partnerships grounded in sport.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All those at the event recognised how sport influences more than just the field of play; it shapes economies, builds global reputation, drives&nbsp;innovation&nbsp;and creates connections that few other sectors can.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During&nbsp;the&nbsp;US&nbsp;visit, we also&nbsp;went to&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;universities&nbsp;to&nbsp;open up&nbsp;conversations&nbsp;about international student recruitment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the next few&nbsp;years,&nbsp;the US will host&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;global&nbsp;sporting events \u2013&nbsp;the men\u2019s FIFA World Cup&nbsp;this summer, the 2027 Invictus Games, and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028.&nbsp;These will be&nbsp;the perfect stepping stones for UK-US collaboration,&nbsp;and we at Loughborough have a distinctive role to play. Our strengths in\u202fhigh\u2011performance\u202fsport, Para and disability sport, athlete\u202fdevelopment\u202fand health innovation, combined with US leadership in commercial scale, media, professional leagues and infrastructure, provide opportunities to make a real shift change in the way we approach&nbsp;sport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/d634405newaccomodation.jpg\" alt=\"Four members of staff including Professor Nick Jennings wearing hi-vis jackets and green helmets standing outside of the new student accommodation development on campus.\" class=\"wp-image-729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/d634405newaccomodation.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/d634405newaccomodation-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/d634405newaccomodation-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Work formally begins on new student accommodation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work&nbsp;has now officially begun&nbsp;on the University\u2019s newest hall of residence on campus, when I joined colleagues from the University, LSU President Mia&nbsp;Jackson&nbsp;and representatives&nbsp;from\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.graham.co.uk\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-may-26&amp;utm_content=graham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GRAHAM<\/a>, the firm building the new hall,&nbsp;to\u202fformally\u202f\u2018break ground\u2019.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u202fnew hall\u202fwill provide 552 en-suite bedspaces across five blocks, offering self-catered, en-suite facilities with shared study and social space,&nbsp;set within\u202flandscaped\u202fsurroundings&nbsp;and with&nbsp;easy access&nbsp;to&nbsp;key University facilities, such as the Edward Herbert Building, the soon-to-be completed\u202fDigiLabs\u202fCentral, the Library,\u202fPowerbase\u202fand the Students\u2019 Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This week we launched&nbsp;a call&nbsp;for staff and students&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/internal\/news\/2026\/may\/help-name-and-design-our-new-hall-of-residence\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-may-26&amp;utm_content=new-accomodation-name-and-logo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">propose a name&nbsp;and logo&nbsp;for the new accommodation<\/a>, with the&nbsp;winners being&nbsp;revealed next month.&nbsp;We\u2019d&nbsp;welcome&nbsp;suggestions for names that&nbsp;have&nbsp;a strong connection to the history&nbsp;or&nbsp;unique character of the University, with female names and names from a range of personal,&nbsp;cultural&nbsp;and ethnic backgrounds&nbsp;particularly encouraged.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u202fnew\u202fhall of residence&nbsp;is&nbsp;the first to be built on campus for\u202fnearly\u202feight\u202fyears.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;a\u202fsignificant\u202finvestment in the Loughborough Student Experience and will help to cement Loughborough\u2019s status as one of the UK\u2019s\u202fvery best\u202funiversities.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/chinattvistgroupshot.jpg\" alt=\"Players from the Chinese Table Tennis Team pictured with Professor Nick Jennings, China&apos;s UK Ambassador Zheng Zeguang and other dignitaries.\" class=\"wp-image-730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/chinattvistgroupshot.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/chinattvistgroupshot-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/chinattvistgroupshot-768x448.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chinese table tennis team visit London campus&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This month the Loughborough University London campus hosted a visit from China\u2019s national table tennis team, who were in the UK for the World Team Championships.&nbsp;I was delighted to be able to meet them,&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;senior representatives from the Chinese Table Tennis Association, Table Tennis England, and high-level diplomats including the Chinese Ambassador to the UK, Zheng Zeguang.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was an honour for&nbsp;Loughborough&nbsp;to host&nbsp;the Chinese team\u2019s&nbsp;visit, which was&nbsp;their&nbsp;only UK&nbsp;non-competition&nbsp;appearance&nbsp;following their&nbsp;remarkable victory at the World Championships; both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams were once again crowned champions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;team\u2019s visit to our campus&nbsp;included a panel discussion on sport and diplomacy, led by Dr Tim Oliver from Loughborough University London,&nbsp;which explored the lasting impact of \u2018Ping Pong Diplomacy\u2019&nbsp;\u2013 the historic 1971 exchange between China and the West that helped reshape international relations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were also treated to&nbsp;a table tennis exhibition from Team China, offering a rare glimpse of the&nbsp;immense&nbsp;skill and precision that has made them one of the most dominant teams in global sport. The team are true superstars in China.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High profile visits such as these reinforce our reputation as a global University, strengthen our longstanding relationships with partners in China and provide the momentum to create even deeper connections for the years ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/xlabheadimage_1.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Rachel Thomson, Professor Nick Jennings and Paul Ramsbottom OBE at the opening of the X-Lab Extreme.\" class=\"wp-image-731\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/xlabheadimage_1.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/xlabheadimage_1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/vice-chancellor\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/59\/2026\/06\/xlabheadimage_1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New lab&nbsp;to&nbsp;test materials at extremes of temperatures and pressures<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wolfson X-Lab Extreme \u2013 a new facility that will be pivotal in the advancement of Loughborough\u2019s clean energy research \u2013&nbsp;was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/media-centre\/press-releases\/2026\/may\/x-lab-extreme\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-may-26&amp;utm_content=x-lab-extreme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">formally&nbsp;opened<\/a>&nbsp;this month&nbsp;in the&nbsp;School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering. The lab will enable industry partners and researchers to use equipment only available in a handful of places across the world&nbsp;to research, test and develop a new generation of materials that can withstand, and function safely in, extreme environments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lab was formally launched by Paul Ramsbottom OBE, Chief Executive of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wolfson.org.uk\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=vc-newsletter-may-26&amp;utm_content=wolfson-foundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wolfson Foundation<\/a>, which provided a grant of \u00a31.1 million to set up the&nbsp;facility. I was delighted to&nbsp;welcome Paul back to campus to celebrate the impact of our&nbsp;long-term&nbsp;partnership with the Wolfson&nbsp;Foundation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Wolfson X-Lab Extreme houses the&nbsp;Gleeble&nbsp;3800, a specialist piece of equipment and the first of its kind in the UK and Europe. This time, each Commonwealth nation and territory has been given its own baton to customise and decorate, allowing it to reflect and celebrate its unique culture<em>.<\/em> All 74&nbsp;batons will be reunited at the&nbsp;Games&nbsp;Opening Ceremony.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s Games are particularly special for Loughborough, as we are the official University Partner\u202fof\u202fTeam England. This value-in-kind partnership\u202fis an opportunity for us to further our\u202flong-standing\u202frelationship with Team England\u202fand raise Loughborough\u2019s profile on the world stage.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our\u202fUniversity\u202flogo will appear on the podium kit, including\u202fat\u202fthe\u202fmedal ceremonies.
