Further&nbsp;down in this blog post we\u2019ll&nbsp;also&nbsp;be providing information on how you can claim a free eye test voucher through&nbsp;the University.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why\u00a0should I get an eye test?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should get your eyes tested at least once every two years. By doing so, an optician can&nbsp;monitor your vision (and suggest how to correct it to improve your quality of life if needed), alongside checking for any common or rare eye conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of common conditions include cataracts and\u00a0glaucoma.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/cataracts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cataracts<\/a>\u00a0are a small disc which develops in your eye causing cloudy patches. If left untreated, your vision can worsen and even lead to blindness.\u00a0However, they are usually painless and\u00a0there are a few treatment options available.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/glaucoma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glaucoma<\/a>\u00a0is where the optic nerve becomes damaged, resulting in\u00a0increased\u00a0pressure in the eye\u00a0with loss of vision\u00a0over time. Again, a variety of treatment options are available, and both conditions are generally much more common in\u00a0older adults.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image-1-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image-1-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image-1-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image-1-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image-1.jpeg 1167w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What nutrients do I need to include in my diet to support my eye health?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A balanced diet plays a key role in your eye function. Below are some of the fundamental vitamins and nutrients which support eye health:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Vitamin C:&nbsp;Obtained through fruit and vegetables&nbsp;<\/li><li>Vitamin E: Sourced through nuts and seeds&nbsp;<\/li><li>Vitamin A: Found in animal products and&nbsp;colourful&nbsp;fruit and vegetables&nbsp;<\/li><li>Omega 3:&nbsp;Supports visual development and retinal function and can be consumed by eating oily fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Lutein and Zeaxanthin: This antioxidant&nbsp;helps block blue light damage and is found in leafy greens, pistachios, eye yolks, and red grapes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image-1024x575.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image-1024x575.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.lboro.ac.uk\/wellbeing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2021\/09\/image.jpeg 1059w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are the risks to my eye health?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>UV Exposure<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>We often think of UV exposure affecting our skin, but we need to protect our eyes too.\u00a0Over time,\u00a0UV\u00a0exposure\u00a0to the eyes\u00a0can increase the risk of developing\u00a0cataracts, growths and even\u00a0cancer.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never look at the sun&nbsp;directly, and&nbsp;try to wear sunglasses when you are outside \u2013 even on cloudier days.&nbsp;Wraparound sunglasses and those with&nbsp;ultraviolet protection are the safest options.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li><strong>Smoking<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Smoking increases the risk of destroying eye blood&nbsp;vessels, and&nbsp;can also make age-related macular degeneration&nbsp;(AMD) and cataracts more likely to occur, which can worsen your vision especially when left untreated.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li><strong>Screen time<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>A significant amount of screen time can cause dryness to the eyes, and research is finding it may possibly cause cases of near-sightedness as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take regular breaks,&nbsp;avoid looking at screens shortly before you go to sleep, and&nbsp;put dedicated time aside each day to exercise or undertake another activity that isn\u2019t&nbsp;screen-focused.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li><strong>Make up<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Old or out-of-date make-up will build up bacteria&nbsp;and can increase the chances of an eye infection. Replace&nbsp;products every three months (unless otherwise stated) and regularly wash your brushes in hot, soapy water.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also consider using a&nbsp;more gentle&nbsp;make up remover&nbsp;if you have particularly sensitive eyes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\"><li><strong>Poor contact lens hygiene<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>A lack of care&nbsp;when using contact lenses may result in&nbsp;inflammation or&nbsp;a fungal infection, so follow the hygiene instructions for your contact lenses.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Free eye tests\u00a0for eligible staff members\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Occupational Health issues vouchers for eligible staff members to have a free eye test. The voucher is conditional on testing being carried out at the University\u2019s chosen optician, Specsavers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To obtain your voucher, please email&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:occupationalhealth@lboro.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">occupationalhealth@lboro.ac.uk<\/a>&nbsp;and confirm the following information:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>That you are a PC user (DSE) at the University\u00a0<\/li><li>You have not had an eye test in the last two years\u00a0<\/li><li>Your staff number\u00a0<\/li><li>Your Department\/ School\u00a0<\/li><li>Your staff contract is for 12 consecutive weeks or more.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The voucher also entitles you to a contribution or discount for a pair of glasses if you require them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All staff are&nbsp;asked&nbsp;to take a Display Screen Equipment self-assessment if you have not already.&nbsp;Further information can be found&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/services\/hr\/support\/occupational-health\/displayscreenequipmentdse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You can find out more information on how to keep your eyes healthy by checking out\u00a0SuperWellness\u2019\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YHoTcMmPDo0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>20-minute video<\/em><\/a><em>.
