Where are you now?

I’m currently with the Institute of Engineering and Technology working on their research journals. I pre-screen papers, oversee the peer review process, deal with authors, reviewers and editors and oversee the production process. I am part of the Open Access project team which is working on launching a new ‘gold’ open access journal and will help to develop an e-first publishing model for the hybrid journals.

How did you get there?

I took part in a number of work experience placements: two at book publishers and one with a magazine. This helped me gain an advantage when applying for jobs as I had experience using the skills learnt on my course. I found my current job through a job agency who suggested it to me, I started on a six month temporary contract and then got a permanent role with the Open Access journal.

Where are you going?

I hope to gain further experience and skills through my current job and possibly learn how their book and magazine publishing works. Once I have gained enough experience, I hope to move onto another publishers either in the editorial or production team.

What advice would you give to a student studying your subject at university now?

I would recommend getting as much work experience as possible, it doesn’t have to be at a main stream publishers, it can be working on university magazines or being on the committee of a society. It will all help when applying for jobs.
