Examinations, music and good health
Examinations period is always a daunting time for students, no matter how well you might have prepared. We all approach it in different ways of course, but for me, a good way to prepare for exams is to be able to relax through music.Ever since I had the opportunity to study with colleagues that are music-crazy during my second year of undergrad, music has become a way of drifting along while concentrating on my work or study. That is the reason I always seem to have earphones or headphones with me. I can always find the perfect music to listen to, no matter the mood I find myself.
While we all have different taste in music, and there is not a single type of music to make us all relax, I tend to listen to soul, movie soundtracks, and Enya. I always find such music inspiring and relaxing.
I must point out that as a research student I have the privilege of not writing exams :). But I still encounter students preparing or writing exams, either as an invigilator or some of the students I work with in laboratories, who have exams to write. I can empathise with them, the more reason I avoid the library as much as possible during this period, which to the credit of Loughborough University, opens 24 hours during exam period.
I stated in previous blogs how I engage in some activities such as walking in parks or countryside. I embarked on some recently. While the damp morning didn’t put me off, I was able to enjoy my walk, which oddly reminded me of the rainforest region in southern Nigeria (where I’m from). The amazing thing is we are approaching summer, with the smell of fresh flowers and leaves which brings some calmness to the environment especially this busy period. I love nature. I can’t wait to go out more during the coming weeks and months when we envisage more sunshine than rain (fingers crossed). It has nothing to do with climate change, it just happens to be the way it is here in U.K.
At this stage I should also bring up the need to have and maintain good health, so as to be able to carry out our day to day activities. I found myself on the wrong end, but I would always be grateful for the care I received while I was admitted at the hospital. We tend to take some things for granted until we have a different view of things to better grasp the perspective of those that experience/ deal with illness often. I am lucky, as I was able to get back on my feet quickly, but the high level of care just makes me more determined to continue my research work, as coincidentally, it involves the enhancement of drugs for illnesses such as cancer and some other terminal diseases.
Bye for now and good luck to all those writing exams. Always remember, exams are just a way for you to show how amazing you are, and the leap you’ve made in making yourself better compared to the previous year.
