Salomé Doré: International Events
My name is Salomé Doré and I’m from Nice, France. I’m your LSU International Development Officer for 2017/18. As your International Development Officer, and being an international student myself, I know how hard it can be to arrive in a new country – give my first blog a read to find out how my first days went in Loughborough.
Student Involvement
As an International DO, my main role is to make sure every international student has the best experience they can in Loughborough. This also means promoting other sections they can get involved in.
With my committee, we organise events such as the International Day or the International Party to celebrate the diversity of Loughborough University. These are also events, where international students feel more comfortable to socialise and meet people from similar cultures.
International Students’ Network
This year, I changed the committee structure a little bit. We now have an International Students’ Network which consists of Regional Ambassadors. This means there is a representative from every region of the world. It makes my job easier; the ambassadors have to organise small events for students from their region.
They are the first point of contact for students from their region as well. They understand their culture better than I do and can relate to the students from similar backgrounds. For example, our North American ambassador has organised a Thanksgiving dinner for the end of the month. It will be next week Thursday, 23rd November, so please join us at Toby Carvery at 8pm!
Aims for the year
My aim for the year is to make sure the international section continues the way it has been. In the past years it’s been growing a lot, and now we’ve got our traditions, like International Day or International Showcase.
I would like to see how the International Students’ Network works out this year. It might need restructuring but at the moment I believe it is going fabulously. My aim with the Network was to make sure everyone is represented, to offer this representation and feel welcomed in Loughborough. I think we managed to achieve this.
Events coming up
What else do I want to achieve this year? I might add a few more events to our traditions. If we have the capacity, we might organise an International Ball. It would be amazing if we could have a ball as this would be the first one ever.
Any events coming up soon? Yes! Yes! Yes! We have the International Day in a few days which is the biggest event of the section. This is the biggest day event happening in the Union, which will be all of Room1 and Piazza. There will be many countries represented. Last year we had around 45 stalls. You can try food from each country or ask the representatives questions about their culture. We will also have a few performances in Room1.
