The ‘Add New Event / Theme’ functionality allows you to create a theme (eg social history; politics; technological developments) which runs across the full duration of a timeline, and then to superimpose individual events which relate to that theme (eg period of famine; dissolution of Parliament; invention of steam engine). You may find it useful to exploit colour coding of themes / events to make the links clearer.
