Salomé Doré: My international experience
My name is Salomé Doré and I’m from Nice, France. I’m your LSU International Development Officer for 2017/18. As your International Development Officer, and being an international student myself, I know how hard it can be to arrive in a new country – I want to make sure that you are having the time of your life here at Loughborough.
First days in Loughborough
This year I’m in my third year student in School of Social Sciences. Everything looks a little bit easier now, but this was not always the case.
When I first arrived I was really scared and confused about everything. Google was my best friend during Freshers’ week. I searched everything all the time especially the new slang I had to learn [Ed: Hey, luckily we’ve got a blog on Deciphering the Loughborough Lingo]
To compliment my course (Media and Communications) I knew I had to get involved with something media related. When I finally had the courage to go up to the Students’ Union’s Media Office, there he was Bryn Wilkes, sitting on the other side of the office.
It started with a Radio Show and I ended up being really keen on media in my first year. I did a bit of Label, which is LSU’s student magazine, and LSUTV as well. I tried as much as I could and I loved it!
Once I got involved with one thing, I slowly started to explore other opportunities in the Union. For example, I would go to an Action project, and after a while, all these little things built up.
Throughout your time in university, you meet new people and hear about what they are getting involved with. Eventually, you might end up trying those things as well. It’s a growing experience. The more you do things, the more you learn new skills and grow as a person.
I think I’m more mature now and definitely more confident. I can do presentations in front of hundreds of people, which I wouldn’t have been able to do in my first year. Loughborough really made me what I am today and changed me in a positive way.
My learning experience
I really like the fact that the lecturers at Loughborough are truly passionate about what they are doing. They want to help you; if you go and talk to them they will always be happy to help you. Most of my lecturers have written a book on the topics they are teaching which really shows passion for the area. If someone was not showing any passion about the module, it would become boring and students wouldn’t learn anything.
Free time
In my free time, when I’m not studying or doing my DO job, I’m planning my projects as Action Kids Trips project leader. I’m also running my radio show, called the Salomé and Sarah Show, every Tuesday between 5-6pm. This year, I returned to the French Society as their Secretary. Additionally, I’m a Student Ambassador for LSU and a Peer Mentor Student Coordinator for international students.
It might sound a lot, but I love all the activities I get involved with. I love being busy and I’m never bored. After a while, you get used to it and time management feels effortless.
