Societies Feature – Scandinavian Society
This week, for our second ‘society feature’, we’ve been speaking to Linnea from the Scandinavian Society. We have lots of great societies for you to join while you’re here at Loughborough, so we’ve taken this opportunity to speak with them to see what they’re all about.
What is the Scandinavian society about?
The Scandinavian society gives you a chance to experience a little bit of Scandinavia in Loughborough. A society for Scandinavians to meet and chat about home or for anyone who has a general appreciation for all that Scandinavia has to offer. It’s a great way to meet new people, enjoy fun events and celebrate our favourite Scandinavian traditions.
Throughout the year we organise socials and events such as Scandinavian film viewings, dinners, having ‘Fika’, IKEA trip, celebrating Lucia and Midsummer, and loads more enjoyable events. We also get involved with the society sports such as dodgeball, basketball, netball and football.
When did the Scandinavian society start?
It started about 3 years ago, so still quite new and growing every year!
What have been some of your memorable events from this last year?
This last year, we did really well in the Dodgeball tournament and came second. But personally I loved the walk up Beacon Hill and BBQ in the summer; they were nice, chilled out events and everyone could chat and get to know each other.
What are your plans for the future of the Scandinavian society?
Scandinavian Society hopes to continue building upon our sporting success, and hosting more socials. We have been in contact with Nottingham’s Nordic Society, so hopefully we can organise a joint social with them. We also hope there will be an Ikea trip at the beginning of the year for students (especially international & erasmus) to get equipped with stuff they need for university.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining the Scandinavian society?
I would say if you are interested in Scandinavia or you have a connection to those countries and enjoy meeting new people please join – it’s an opportunity to meet people who can share your appreciation!
Finally, what’s one thing you want us to know about you, the Scandinavian society?
It is for everyone – not just Scandinavians, despite what the name might suggest. We welcome absolutely anyone who is interested in the country and the culture. The more enthusiasm the better!
