Societies Feature – the Harry Potter and Quidditch Society
If you’re an avid fan of Harry Potter and all that entails, then the Harry Potter and Quidditch Society might be just up your street. Renowned for their fanciful Quidditch practice on Paddock Park, Katie, LSUHPQ Chair dispels the mystery surrounding the society and tells us what they’re all about.
What is the LSU Harry Potter & Quidditch Society all about?
The Harry Potter & Quidditch society is all about bringing together like-minded people, and giving them the opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills.
When did the LSU Harry Potter & Quidditch Society start?
The society was set up in 2012 by Josie Burn and Tomris Fidan.
What have been some of your most memorable events from this last year?
In December 2014 we held our annual Yule Ball which raised over £150 for the Harry Potter Alliance charity.
We have also had a really successful Quidditch season, winning the East Midlands and L Tournaments at the beginning of the term. From this, we went on to win 4th place at the British Quidditch Cup and 13th at the 2015 European Quidditch Cup
What are your plans for the future?
We hope to be more involved with RAG and Action and also plan to have combined socials with other societies. We will be hosting another Yule Ball.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining the LSU Harry Potter & Quidditch Society?
We’re a society that wants to make sure everyone who comes to any of our events enjoys themselves and meets other Harry Potter and Quidditch enthusiasts.
Finally, what’s one thing you want us to know about you, the LSU Harry Potter & Quidditch Society?
We’re a close-knit society that meets regularly; we have weekly Harry Potter themed socials and twice weekly Quidditch training for anyone to get involved in.
For more information on joining them, pop into the Societies office at LSU. They also have a Facebook group, Twitter pages (@LSUHarryPotter & @LboroLongShots), and a blog.
The Longshots provided two members of the UK team that picked up bronze in the 2016 Quidditch World Cup. Bill Orridge (the chap with the yellow headband!) and Jonathan Cookes (back row, 6 from the right) made the trip to Frankfurt and helped defeat Canada for third place. Two of the Longshots also officiated.
