AU Softball and Baseball at Loughborough I Focus Series
We speak to Laura Marty, chair of the AU Softball and Baseball club, who tells us all about the fast growing sport that is taking BUCS by storm.
What levels of experience do you cater to?
The experience within the club ranges from people who are looking to learn a new sport and be active, to people who are highly experienced national players. The club currently has 3 Softball teams and 2 Baseball teams, giving all members a chance to get involved.
Why did you join this club?
I personally joined the club, having played Softball before uni, as a way to not only be involved in the sport but also to be a part of the social aspect of the club.
Best or most memorable moments from your time in the club?
To this day an incredible moment was at the Autumn 2015 Softball Nationals, it was the Loughborough 1st team Vs Loughborough 2nds in the final. For a club which had only been in existence for a short time, to see the development of players and ability all come together, mixed with a highly competitive atmosphere it was truly great and stressful to say the least.
Describe your club in three words!
Unstoppable, social and up-and-coming
Aside from the sport, what kind of social activities does your club get up to?
Being in a club of around 80 members, there is always a chance to be social, with people who are always up for doing something. In the past year nights out after training, team meals, day trips and other social events are very common as the club is becoming a strong group of friends off the field as well as on the field.
Last words – what would you say to someone thinking of picking up the sport?
Before I had ever played softball I had always watched baseball, and was generally just interested in starting a team sport. It’s a chance to try something new and take part in a sport that is rapidly growing in the UK, and of course be part of a very social group of people!
