DJ Society | Focus Series
Jack, chair of DJ Society, shares how his society showcases the best of student DJ talent. If your passion lies with live techno and house music, drop these guys a line.
What is your society all about?
Fostering a community for like-minded DJ’s and producers to meet, chat, discuss, improve and perform. We have many different levels of ability from complete beginner to established residents and owners of Loughborough’s many events.
Our main focus is to give these DJ’s an opportunity to easily meet each other and improve their skills. We often get opportunities to play at hall and university events as well and we have a range of genres that can be suited to any occasion.
What sort of events are put on by the society?
Radio shows and live-streams, freshers pre-drinks and day parties, University events, socials, and we also run our own events each term in town. Our events are a mixture of house and techno music in a unique location and showcase the best of the talent that we have in the society.
Why, when and how did you join?
I learned to DJ at the end of my first year over summer and joined the society in my second year. A close friend of mine, Ben Steward, was the chair and I decided to run for social sec in February 2015. After my placement year, I informally stepped in to help a committee that had fallen apart over the summer term because of people not returning to University. I was social sec again for 2016/17. In 2017 I really wanted to share what I had learned from previous committees and put together a great bunch of people to take the society forward. I am really confident in the work we have put in so far and this year will be so much fun!
What have been some of the society’s memorable events from the past year?
A highlight of last year was the terrace party we put on at The Griffin on Monday 19th June. We managed to showcase nine of our members and attracted hundreds of people over the course of the afternoon and evening. We went all out with the décor and really transported the otherwise very standard beer garden into a proper event space.

This year, we have secured a monthly live stream with our friends DBE, which kicked off Wednesday 20th September. Showcasing the best in house, disco and minimal we have a great time and got lots of reach online. We look forward to hosting this regularly and getting more of our members involved!

Extravagant, sociable, fun.
What would you say to someone considering joining?
If you can mix, why wouldn’t you? If you can’t but are keen to learn, I can’t think of anything that would be more relevant!
