FLIX Society l Focus Series
This week, we ask the former-chair of FLIX club, Sam Hill, to tell us all about the unique club. Whether you love settling down for a good film or are interested in the technicalities of running a cinema, FLIX is for you!
What is FLIX Student-Run Cinema about?
We show films every Sunday with National Theatre Live and other special events happening occasionally during the week. Flix doesn’t play at being a real functioning cinema, we are a real functioning cinema. We have industry standard equipment that members of the society can be trained on.
In my time on the committee for Flix, I have met multiple people who have shaped a career from their experiences at Flix. It is one of the most passionate groups I have ever been involved with on campus.
What sorts of events are put on by the society?
As mentioned previously we have a regular film schedule mainly decided by our committee. We are always open to suggestions though! Being a student-run cinema we are able to put on the events that we want to put on and not worry (too much) about whether we will turn a profit.
We do at least 1 large charity event a year, in previous years it was our Back to the Future Day Event where we showcased props from the films, collaborated with other societies and most importantly raised a huge amount of money for charity.
We also set up a few “Essential Viewing” screenings where we show films that we consider some of the greatest films ever made that most people won’t have seen in cinema before.
Why, when and how did you join?
During my freshers, I went along to one of the screenings that Flix did, I needed a night off from the hectic hall freshers. After the screening, I spoke to one of the then committee members and started volunteering at Flix a week or two later. Since then I haven’t looked back!
Best or most memorable moments from your time with the society?
One of the greatest moments that I have experienced while being part of Flix was at the society awards two years ago where we won both “Most Outstanding Event” and “Best In General Interest Section Award”. I had no real expectations that we would win anything as there had been so many other great things societies had done that year. It became a very special moment for me and the rest of the society seeing all our hard work recognised.
Describe your society in three words!
Passionate, Friendly & Enthusiastic.
Last word – what would you say to someone thinking of joining up?
I would say just go for it! I don’t know anyone who has joined Flix and regretted it.
