AU Women’s Rugby at Loughborough l Focus Series
We spoke to Lucy Nye of AU Women’s rugby team, to find out more about why you should give a fresher taster session a go, and what makes LSWRFC so much fun to be involved with!
What levels of experience do you cater to?
We cater to anyone who is keen to try the sport, no experience is needed. We currently have 2 teams set up. Our first team is in the top BUCS league which is our competitive team for those looking to compete at a high level and our second team is designed for people with little to no experience to try the sport at a comfortable level whilst having fun and seeing what the sport has to offer.
Why did you join this club?
I joined as I played rugby before I came to university so automatically knew which club I wanted to join. Meeting all the girls and coaches has also been a massive part of why I have enjoyed playing so much and carried on being involved.
Best or most memorable moments from your time in the club?
Our second team winning their league and being promoted was a massive high this season, but also beating Leeds met, our biggest competitors, on home turf this season was an amazing feeling! Our end of season awards is always good craic as well!
Describe your club in three words!
Friendly, hardworking, fun
Aside from the sport, what kind of social activities does your club get up to?
As well as the standard socials on a Wednesday night after the matches, where we head to Hey Ewe, we have been paintballing, we go on tour to Spain each year and we have pasta parties every Tuesday night before games. We head to our favourite pub, The Griffin, on a regular basis for a few drinks and catch up. We’re also each other’s training partners where we head to the gym together and do fitness sessions if that’s what you’re into!
Last words – what would you say to someone thinking of picking up the sport?
It’s a perfect sport to try whilst at university; don’t be nervous because it’s something new or unfamiliar – that’s what makes it so exciting and the friends you make here are friends for life.
