LSU Velocity l Focus Series
We look to the skies as Lottie tells us all about LSU Velocity, a society dedicated to both aviation and transport.
What is Velocity society about?
Velocity is a transport and aviation society with our very own flying club. We run lots of different trips throughout the year including the annual trip and of course flying from East Midlands Airport.
What sorts of events are put on by the society?
We organise lots of events, from tours of Birmingham Airport, DHL cargo hub, and Network Rail to talks by Willie Walsh and other leading professionals in the transport industry. Members can also take control and fly light aircraft from Donair Flying Club at East Midlands Airport and or take a back seat and enjoy the views.
Our traditional annual trip is always popular. In the past we have gone to Stockholm, Barcelona and Toulouse. This year Velocity goes to Prague and Munich! We’re looking forward to tours of both airports and enjoying what both countries have to offer.
Why, when and how did you join?
I originally only joined for the annual trip, three nights in Sweden at a great price. I didn’t expect to get involved more than that but after going to the freshers welcome social and being persuaded by course mates to attend some of the trips I was impressed by how much I enjoyed them and they supported my degree. With a low membership fee and lots to offer, you have nothing to lose and lots to gain from a unique and engaging society like Velocity.
Best or most memorable moments from your time with the society?
In 2015 we were lucky enough to spend a night in the Jumbo Hostel, Stockholm. A retired Boeing 747 converted into hotel rooms, it was a unique and exciting experience that I would never have done if it wasn’t for Velocity. Alongside this we visited Gothenburg Aeroseum, located inside a declassified cold war bunker, the former top secret facility was filled with fighter planes and civil aircraft and was a privilege to visit.
Describe your society in three words!
Planes, trains and automobiles!
Last word – what would you say to someone thinking of joining up?
Give it a go! Join like minded people, whether you just want to take advantage of our trips and socials, vocational events or you just want to fly!
