LU Model United Nations Society l Focus Series

1 profilePresident of the LU Model United Nations society, Aarushi Mittal, tells us all about the well-traveled society!

What is Model United Nations society about?

Model United Nations is a society that enables students to take part in debates about current affairs and international relations, using the format that is followed in the United Nations. Students represent different countries and work alongside other students to develop solutions for issues. We’re also a registered youth branch under the United Nations Association – UK which enables students to network with diplomats and to attend events such as a speech by the UN Secretary General – Ban-Ki-Moon. Whether you want to increase your awareness of global affairs, improve your public speaking skills, know what it’s like to represent a country, voice your opinions on issues or simply look dapper and travel to different cities and meet people from other universities – MUN is for you! This is an amazing opportunity that helps you gain skills that employers seek so not only does it let you interact with people who share your interests, it also looks impressive on your CV.

What sorts of events are put on by the society?

We attend conferences all over the UK and abroad. We’ve gone for conferences from London to Bath to Singapore! We also actively volunteer for social issues, participate in sports, and organise fun socials. Apart from this, we hold weekly sessions to practice and train for the different conferences in order to help us develop our skills and compete better.

Why, when and how did you join?

I’ve been a part of MUN since I was 13 and I haven’t looked back since. After attending multiple conferences as a delegate, I now chair the committees at different conferences. When I came to Loughborough, I went straight to the Model UN stall at the Fresher’s Fair. It’s been a great experience – I’ve made good friends, learned a lot from the weekly sessions, and got to travel around the country! Every conference has been a learning experience and has given us memorable moments with new friends in new cities.

Best or most memorable moments from your time with the society?

Our members have won several awards at different universities and it gives us immense pride in representing Loughborough at these conferences. Given my experience, I’m selected by other universities to chair and moderate the debates at their conferences. The committee sessions bring out the best in us, from heated arguments to hilarious committee punishments – we’ve seen it all! The socials are a major aspect of these conferences, and all sorts of events are held, including club nights, formal dinners, and champagne receptions. Meeting new people is always a major benefit of MUN, and we’ve all had loads of fun with people who are now life long friends.

Last word – what would you say to someone thinking of joining up?

Joining Model UN will definitely be an enriching experience during your time at university. You explore so much about the issues around the world, meet different people and form different opinions and discover yourself. Along with all the fun, you learn a lot and make lasting memories. You don’t need to be experienced to join MUN, you’re trained to learn the United Nations procedure and we’ve got a number of conferences lined up for you to compete and practice in! Come along to our introductory session or drop in during a weekly session to know more about us.
