Sikh Society | Focus Series
We talk to Ranbir from Sikh Society about her experience as a member. If you want to connect with students with similar beliefs, or learn more about the Sikh faith then this society is the one for you.
What is your society all about?
Loughborough Sikh Society is open to all, with the intentions of enlightening students of our Guru’s teachings and spreading the universal message of “recognising the human race as one”, which is a very important aspect of our faith. We aim to bring together Sikh students across campus and increase diversity by holding events that welcome all students.
What sort of events are put on by the society?
Loughborough Sikh Society hosts inspiring, interesting and thought provoking talks by special guests regarding the Sikh History and Sikhi today. Some of the topics are “The teachings of the Guru’s” and “Sikh history”.
In the past Sikh Society have been involved with local communities and the local Gurdwara to help out and provide Seva in the local Loughborough Town. The purpose of this is to feed the homeless and encourage others to partake in Seva which promotes selfless service and equality.
We also hold regular socials that include movie nights, bowling, inter-uni paint-balling, seva day and many more including the annual “Dil Se” charity event.
This year we will be collaborating with other universities in order to connect with other students and run events on a bigger scale.
Loughborough Sikh Society will be holding events for Bandi Chorr (Diwali) & Vaisakhi in order to allow students living on campus to celebrate with other students and feel at home.
Why, when and how did you join?
As a Sikh student attending university away from home I wanted to connect with other students that shared similar beliefs to me.I also wanted to learn more about the Sikh faith as I felt that I didn’t know much about my own faith; so I decided to head over to the talks held by the Society.
I first joined when I attended the Freshers Bazaar and slowly became friends with a few people in the Society which made me feel very welcome.
Best or most memorable moments from your time in the society?
The best moments for me were attending the talks that were organised by the Society. I found these very interesting and I certainly learnt a lot over the year. Making friends was also one of the best aspects as I was able to connect with fellow Sikh students which made me feel very comfortable.
Describe your society in three words…
Happiness, equality and love.
What would you say to someone considering joining?
Loughborough Sikh Society are very welcoming and provide an environment that is filled with faith, love, honesty and happiness. The Society will enlighten you on why it is important to treat everyone as your equal.
