LSU Sing! l Focus Series
We speak to Amie, chair of LSU Sing!, a musically diverse performance choir who range from classical to modern acapella. They are well known on campus for performing at big events such as sports matches or society showcases, as well as at their own events.
What is LSU Sing! about?
LSU Sing! is a friendly and welcoming choir in which all our members share the love for singing. We hold no auditions so it is all abilities and all levels of confidence welcome. In our society, we love to perform around campus and the local community. We are a student run choir for students and we aim and succeed in being inclusive of all members and therefore create a close knit community within the society.
What sorts of events are put on by the society?
As a choir throughout the year we perform at a whole variety of events, especially around Christmas. Over the past academic year, we have performed at university sporting events, in collaboration with other societies and events in the community. However, what LSU Sing! prides itself on is our Annual Spring Showcase through which we raise money Ashmount, a local SEN school here in Loughborough.
Why, when and how did you join?
I’ve always been in and out of choirs throughout my life and therefore when I found LSU Sing! at the Freshers Bazaar I knew I wanted to visit a taster session.
The reason why I joined and stayed was simply because of the family environment that is celebrated in Sing!; having a group of people who are immediately so kind and supportive was fantastic. This kind of atmosphere is exactly what I think every fresher (or returner) needs and LSU Sing! provide that.
Best or most memorable moments from your time with the society?
One of the most memorable society moments during my time in LSU Sing! was the 2017 Annual Spring Showcase. This is our biggest event which we work towards for most of the year.
This past academic year being a committee member allowed me to see exactly how much hard work goes into our show. Being able to, not only raise money for Ashmount School, but hear such positive comments and applause from the audience is such a reward for the society. This is something I cannot wait to replicate and expand upon over my next year as Sing!’s Chair. I am super proud of my society and cannot wait to show them off during the next academic year.
Describe your society in three words!
Welcoming, supportive and enjoyable.
What would you say to someone thinking of joining up?
100% do it! No matter your experience, confidence or skill come along to our taster sessions throughout October. We hold no auditions and we have only one rule in Sing! which is to enjoy yourself.
