Making your first year count towards your career
Being a student at Loughborough gives you a competitive edge when it comes to employers. We are consistently in the top 20 universities targeted by the UK’s top recruiters. This means you will have a wealth of opportunities, placements, internships and jobs available at your fingertips – but you still have to work hard for them!
Get in early!
As a first year, you may be thinking your career is a long way off- but research shows that those who get involved earlier get noticed by employers and get ahead! So here are a few top tips to make the most out of your first year….
Take part in societies and sport
Employers favour those who get involved with activities on campus which are outside of your studies. Taking on committee positions in a society or sport, or becoming a program rep for your course will develop your skills in teamwork, decision-making, leadership, communication and more. All of which are key for employers.
Attend Careers Fairs and Employer Events
You’ll be able to get a feel for some of the employer links we have here at Loughborough and the types of employers you could work for in the future. Not only that, but you’ll have the chance to talk to some big names and find out about their opportunities first hand. Take a look here.
Get to Know Your Careers Team
Each school has its own specialist careers team. They are there to support you throughout your time at Loughborough. Say hello to them. You can also follow the team on Twitter.
We also run a workshop programme called “Direct Your Career” covering topics like CVs, covering letters, application forms, interviews and more.
Volunteer and Work Shadow
These are great ways to explore potential careers, gain experience and network with employers. You can contact your careers team to help you secure volunteering and work experience locally, throughout the UK and internationally too.
