10 things as old as our 2016 Freshers
1. Saving Private Ryan
Captain John H. Miller’s search for paratrooper Private Ryan released in July 1998. We feel old.
2. Windows 98
The clue is in the name, Windows 98 was retailed in June 1998. Our Freshers will never remember the struggle.
3. Google is founded
It’s hard to believe that we ever survived in a world without Google, which was founded in September 1998. How would our students have written their essays? (Hint: our amazing Library)
4. Spyro the Dragon
A PlayStation classic, players got into Spyro’s dashing, fire-breathing adventure in September 1998. Our Freshers don’t know what they missed out on.
5. Will Smith – Gettin Jiggy with it
Released in 1998, recorded in 1997. It spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart!
6. Robot Wars
Robot Wars first aired in February 1998 and it was amazing. Does Dara O’ Briain stand up to the amazing talent of Craig Charles, now that Robot Wars is back on our screens? We’ll let you decide.
7. ITV2 launched
Launched in December 1998. We bet Britain’s Got More Talent wasn’t on the original broadcasting.
8. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (book)
J.K. Rowling published her second entry into the spellbinding world of Harry Potter in July. And this year’s Freshers were only just born. Sigh.
9. ’98 Winter Olympics held in Nagano, Japan
The first Olympics which held fixtures in curling, snowboarding and women’s ice hockey!
10. Assembly of International Space Station (ISS) begins
The most expensive object ever built began to be assembled in November 1998.
