AU Dance l Focus Series

We talk to Livi, the Media Rep for AU Dance. She tells us all about her experience as a member, and why you won’t regret heading down to their taster sessions and auditions this year!

What levels of experience do you cater to?

Here at LSDC we cater for novice, intermediate and advanced Dancers in most genres, so we welcome anyone, no matter their experience – so long as they are committed! We offer classes in Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Contemporary, Hip-Hop, Latin, Wildcard as well as having an External Competition team. This year we’re excited to be expanding and we now offer classes in Commercial and Strength & Conditioning – there really is something for everyone! Purchasing a membership guarantees you a place in a class but you can try out for as many as you want!

Our audition week will be in October and each member is required to take part. The auditions are made to feel like a dance class so they aren’t as scary as they sound! We encourage everyone to audition for our 1st Teams – if you do not make it you can then try out for the 2nd teams and 3rd teams later in the week. You must audition for every genre separately, so you might not always be in the same team – this means you can audition for new genres without affecting your place in another.

Why did you join this club?

I have danced my whole life and knew first-hand the amazing bonds you make with your fellow dancers when you’re surrounded by them at rehearsals each week, performances and social events. I knew Dance would allow me to meet new groups of people within the University and would also push me to better my skills. Best decision I’ve made at uni so far!

Best or most memorable moments from your time in the club?

That’s a tricky one! Personally, my favourite must be the Loughborough Dance Competition.

It spans across two days with around 30 Universities coming to compete alongside us (making it the biggest inter-University dance comp in the UK!). This year the trophy presentation was amazing because we had such a successful year placing in 9 out of 12 categories – taking home four 1st place trophies! Being surrounded by 1500 dancers all with the same passion as you is an amazing atmosphere and the real cherry on top is that we got to do it all on our home turf!

Describe your club in three words…

Competitive, fun and confident!

Aside from the sport, what kind of social activities does your club get up to?

LSDC has two members of committee dedicated to social events and this past year they definitely didn’t disappoint!

We hold socials throughout the year, including ones collaborating with other sport clubs, but also have socials dedicated to large events in our busy calendar. Our biggest social is after the Loughborough Dance Competition when all those who competed (1500 people – yes, it’s a lot) are invited to the Union; which ultimately ends in a dance off. We also host a Winter and Summer ball, pre-show socials, BBQ’s and go on tour every year, to name a few!

What would you say to someone thinking of picking up the sport?

Joining Dance was the best decision I ever made – it can help you to gain so many things alongside your dance skills including confidence, friends and amazing memories. We’ll make sure you won’t regret it!

Anything else we should know?

We’re holding our taster sessions on the 4th October, so if you’re interested please do come along and give it a go!
