The GlaxoSmithKline Residential Chemistry Training Experience (2013)

This is a fully-funded, week-long training course designed to give you practical experience of the work of a graduate chemist in the pharmaceutical industry.  Based in the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) research laboratories we will provide you with personalised laboratory tuition together with coaching in interview technique, presentation skills and working in teams.

This programme now in its tenth year will be held at the GlaxoSmithKline Medicines Research Centre, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, on 15th – 20th September 2013.

BASES student conference

The BASES student conference is a fantastic opportunity for any students interested in a career in sport science. ‘Pathways to Practice: Accreditation, Application and Advancement’ offers opportunities to learn of potential pathways to break into the sport science industry and also learn from experts working in the applied/clinical setting, bridging the gap from academia to application. For first time conference attenders, it is a great place to start, meet people of like minds, start to practice your networking skills and learn how to get that first work experience opportunity!’

Teach First

The application deadline for Teach First’s Leadership Development Programme is 20th March 2013. Many subjects have now closed and subjects are continuing to close on a rolling basis. Any final year students interested in applying should start applications ASAP. This will be of particular interest to final year STEM students.

Secondly, our deadline for Teach First Insight is 24th February 2013. Students in their penultimate year from a STEM background should apply for an insight into Teach First through a summer internship. They will automatically earn a place at our Assessment Centre for the Teach First Leadership Development Programme. See here for more details.

Thirdly, applications for Teach First Brand Manager positions are now open. This is an opportunity for students who will be at Loughborough next year to raise awareness of Teach First and gain qualifications in marketing whilst being paid. Hours are flexible and part-time. All Brand Managers will gain an automatic place on the Assessment Centre for the Teach First Leadership Development Programme. See here for more details.

Open Doors 2013 – Skills for Successful Employment

Taking place this Wednesday!!

This afternoon event will offer advice and information to disabled students (including those with long term health conditions, dyslexia and mental health issues) who are looking to go into employment or onto a placement.

There will be an information stand and talks and workshops on subjects such as disclosure, reasonable adjustments in the workplace and Access to Work, as well as a session to help prepare for the careers fair on the 26th February.

TV News Presenting Course

This new  5 day course led by BBC News Presenter – Peter Dobbie, focuses on improving and developing technical and practical skills of TV News Presenting. This in-depth practical based course will focus on the key practical and technical skills that make good broadcast journalists.
The course will provide comprehensive training and will include extensive information on how to further your career in this industry.
Course led by BBC New Presenter, Peter Dobbie. Other course tutors are BBC Journalist, Francis Collings and BBC Make Up Artist, Trisha Christian.

COURSE BREAKDOWN
Introduction to TV News Presenting.
Demonstration of the technique and skills required to use a big board.
How to use the voice effectively when presenting.
In-depth practice of techniques learnt.
Hair and make-up workshop run by Trisha Christian.
Visit to the BBC and tour of the news studios.

This is a five day course held at Pinewood Studios from 10.00am to 5.00pm.
Presenters will record various short bulletins. The reel will be professionally shot and edited and will be approximately 2 minutes long. Presenters will also have the opportunity of adding any additional material that they may already have.
