Graduate Profile of the Month

October 2012′s Graduate Profile of the Month is Ash Cooper. Ash graduated, in 201, with a BSc Physics. He is now a Engineer with Nu-Instruments.

Your background:

I was a bit of a geek before coming to University. A friend and I had run a small business repairing PCs and laptops for people around my village. All the money went into paying for our own computers. I was also an avid multi-instrumentalist, which together with computing, led me to choose a degree in Physics; the underpinnings of both my main hobbies.

My other hobby, language, was the reason I chose Loughborough. I had the chance to take part in the ERASMUS Scheme, which would allow me to use and improve my linguistic skills.

Where are you now?

I now live in Wrexham in Wales, and I work as an Engineer on Mass Spectrometers. I spend months setting up a machine and running tests and experiments on them, until we are happy to ship to our customers. Upon completion, I accompany the device wherever it may be in the world, and spend a month or so, as a guest to the Research Lab or University as an On-Site Technician, before returning home, and starting again.

Where are you going?

After a few years of this postion I would like to either move up in the company, to the development side, or see if I can get a similar position elsewhere in the industry. Preferably in my ERASMUS country, France.

What advice would you give to a student studying your subject at university now?

Do ERASMUS now! No Argument! Just Go!
